First, Something New!
Cold and Flu Nosode by Professional Formulas
This is a homeopathic blend to help support you before and during the flu. A lot of you have liked other homeopathic blends, such as Boiron's Influenzinum, which was released annually but has since been discontinued. This one seems particularly exciting, and it's by a great American company. In addition to an annual blend of homeopathic remedies, it also includes the active homeopathic remedy used in the well-known product Oscillococcinum®. It's tough to get, so give us a call at (631) 722-2246.
Some Old, Trusted Favorites
N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC)
An amino acid and powerful antioxidant that supports glutathione production, helps thin mucus and supports liver function. It has been studied for antiviral, antifungal and antibacterial properties and its ability to break down biofilms, and research suggests it may help reduce symptomatic influenza-like illness as well as its severity.
Vitamin D
Maintaining adequate vitamin D levels is important for healthy immune function, bone health, and much more.
Vitamin A
Another important vitamin for supporting the immune system, as well as the eyes, skin, and bones. It may be particularly useful for immune support during acute illness. Higher doses should be used cautiously and only for short periods under professional guidance, as excessive amounts for too long can damage the liver.
Zinc
Essential for proper immune function and so much more! Research suggests it may help shorten the duration of the common cold.
Vitamin C
A longtime favorite! Regular supplementation may help shorten the duration and severity of colds, in addition to its many other benefits. We've seen that boosting it throughout the day to bowel tolerance can help; just be careful, as too much can cause loose stools.
Medicinal Mushroom Blends
Mushrooms such as reishi, shiitake, maitake, and turkey tail, among others, contain beneficial compounds, including beta-glucans, that help support and modulate immune system function. We have several favorite mushroom blends at the office.
Adaptogenic Herbs
Many people take adaptogens to help manage stress, improve energy, and support overall resilience, but may not realize their potential benefits for immune health. Herbs such as eleuthero (aka Siberian ginseng), ashwagandha, schisandra, and ginseng (and many more) can help the body adapt to physical and emotional stressors while supporting healthy immune function.
There are many more too!

The Basics Still Matter Most
And of course, remember that good sleep, nourishing foods, proper hydration, regular exercise and movement, and regular handwashing are just as important in helping you stay well throughout the season.
